CHAPTER TWELVE

“Was that a glimpse behind the mask?” Adam asked, once they were sure Nick had definitely gone.

“I think he just needs time to calm down,” Arthur assured him weakly, crossing the room to the bar. He poured four brandies with an arm that was still shaking and then returned to the others.

“I can’t do this,” Nicole said, shaking her head. “I can’t get involved in all this.”

“What are you saying?” Adam asked. He put a hand on her shoulder.

“I’m saying I have a kid. We have a kid. I can’t expose him to all this danger. Nick, the council and who knows what else. I’m sorry, Arthur but I’m out.” Tears were welling up in Nicole’s eyes as she stood up and began gathering her things.

“Nicole-” Arthur started.

“She’s right, Arthur,” Maggie said, raising a hand to stop him. “She needs to think about her boy.”

Arthur nodded. “You’re right. I’m sorry I put your son in danger, Nicole. Just know that there will always be a place in this coven for you.” He reached out and gave her hand a small squeeze.

“Thank you, Arthur. Maggie.” She smiled at them both and then shuffled towards the door. When she realised she was alone she turned back to Adam. “Adam, are you coming?”

He shook his head, looking at her but not quite meeting her eyes. “I can’t abandon the coven Nicki,” he said.

“Our son,” she said in a whisper. “You swore to protect him when you signed the adoption papers, you swore to do a better job than the man who walked out on us!”

“I know and I will always protect him, but I will not abandon the coven now!” Adam said quietly.

Her eyes bulged and she took a step forward. She opened her mouth but then closed it again, saying nothing. After one final look around the room she stormed out. A minute later they heard the front door slam.

“I’ll talk to her Arthur, see if I can bring her back,” Adam said.

“Don’t bother. She was right to go. Are you sure you don’t want to go with her?”

“My place is here. I love that little boy more than anyone, except her of course, but I need to do this,” Adam said firmly. Nicole had already had her son when Adam met her so he wasn’t the boy’s biological father. The real father had walked out before he was one though, so Adam had adopted him and raised him as his own.

“Okay. In that case I need you to do that research. The faster the better,” Arthur said.

“What about Nickolas?” Adam asked.

“I’ll bring him back. Somehow,” Arthur said.

Adam finished his drink and left, leaving Arthur alone with Maggie. Arthur sat back in his chair and waited. He knew a telling off was coming and he knew there was no point in fighting it. Maggie had warned him from the start not to get involved with Nickolas Blackwood but he’d ignored her. Every time he’d messed up she had been there,
